OpenAI Inc. announced on Friday the launch of a research preview of its new cloud-based software engineering multi-tasking agent, Codex.

In its official statement, OpenAI explained that Codex can perform multiple tasks, including writing features, responding to inquiries about one's codebase, fixing bugs, and naming pull requests for preview. Each of its tasks will open in its own cloud sandbox environment, preloaded with the user's repository.

"Codex is powered by codex-1, a version of OpenAI o3 optimized for software engineering," OpenAI's blog read. "We're starting to roll out Codex to ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Team users today, with support for Plus and Edu coming soon."
