Bessent: China should not try to devalue its way out
United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reacted on Wednesday to China's decision to raise tariffs on US goods to 84% in retaliation to the 104% tariff imposed by the US on its exports by saying, "So what." He warned Beijing not to "try to devalue its way out" of the trade dispute, stating that devaluing the currency would represent a "tax on others."
Bessent urged China to "come to the table" and discuss a solution, telling Fox News that Washington is considering all options, including delisting Chinese companies from US stock markets. He also called on the Chinese government to "punish" those exporting fentanyl precursors to the US, as the Trump administration holds China responsible for its opioid epidemic.
