Asia mostly lower as US attack on Iran escalates tensions
Asia-Pacific markets mostly fell on Monday following US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend. US President Donald Trump called the strikes a "spectacular military success." Although he had earlier said he would decide within two weeks on involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict, his weekend actions aligned with reports from last week. After the strikes, Trump also raised the possibility of regime change in Iran, one of the major oil producers worldwide.
In Japan, airline stocks were among the biggest losers. Meanwhile, data showed positive signs in Japan's and Australia's economies.
Japan's Nikkei 225 traded 0.18% lower at 7:16 am CET. Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 0.26% and South Korea's Kospi lost 0.33%. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite traded 0.15% higher while the Shenzhen Composite gained 0.30%. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.38% simultaneously. The dollar traded 0.67% higher against the yen at 7:15 am CET, selling for 147.0790.
