AS Tallinna Vesi is the largest water utility in Estonia providing drinking water and wastewater disposal services to over 400 000 people in Tallinn and in several neighbouring municipalities of Tallinn. AS Tallinna Vesi has the exclusive right to provide water and sewerage services in Tallinn's main service area until the year 2020. The company has two treatment plants Ülemiste Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and Paljassaare Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The first Ülemiste Plant started working in 1927 and this plant is still providing services to Tallinners today. In addition the new water treatment plant was built at Ülemiste in 1970. The plants use Lake Ülemiste's water to produce drinking water for about 90% of the City of Tallinn. The remainder of Tallinn, ca 10%, uses ground water. The quality of drinking water in Tallinn has been constantly improving and today meets all the required EU quality standards.
