Manufacturing activity in the United States continued to decline in September, a report published by S&P Global showed on Tuesday. The seasonally adjusted Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) came in at 47.3 in the reported month, down from 47.9 registered in August, remaining in the contraction territory.

Sharper falls could be observed in both output and new orders, amid demand weakness and political uncertainty. Meanwhile, employment tumbled at the strongest pace since the start of 2010, "if the COVID-19 pandemic period is excluded."

"Factories reported the largest monthly drop in production for 15 months in response to a slump in new orders, in turn driving further reductions in employment and input buying as producers scaled back operating capacity," Chief Business Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence Chris Williamson said.
