US lawmaker says Syrian leader open to talks with Israel
Syria's Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa (pictured) told a visiting US congressman last month in Damascus that he was open to negotiating normalized ties with Israel, according to an Associated Press report on Wednesday.
Rep. Marlin Stutzman, who was part of a US delegation that met Al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia today, revealed the conversation details. Stutzman added that Al-Sharaa expressed interest in the Abraham Accords, though any decision would depend on further negotiations. While Stutzman saw this as a positive development, he stressed that Syria's actions would be key to assessing its commitment to normalization.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump met with Al-Sharaa in Riyadh, marking the first meeting between the two countries' leaders in 25 years. Trump expressed support for lifting US sanctions on Syria and urged Al-Sharaa to remove foreign terrorists from the country.
