Trump pauses Canada, Mexico tariffs until April 2
United States President Donald Trump signed on Thursday an executive order temporarily pausing tariffs on certain goods from Canada and Mexico after his previous announcement that the latter country will be exempt from duties compliant with the terms of USMCA [United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement].
At the same time, the president ruled out the possibility of modifying levies imposed on steel and aluminum. Furthermore, the president announced that more tariffs will come in April and that the duties delay on automobiles was only a temporary arrangement with carmakers, adding there will be no exemptions once the new levies come into effect. "We don't need trees, cars, or energy from Canada."
Previously, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said he hoped both Canada and Mexico "will have done a good enough job on fentanyl" by the time Trump announces fresh reciprocal tariffs on April 2.
