United States President-elect Donald Trump has called on Congress to either "get rid of" the "ridiculous debt ceiling" or extend it until 2029 as a necessary step toward securing a government spending agreement.

"Without this, we should never make a deal. Remember, the pressure is on whoever is President," Trump wrote in a post shared on Truth Social.

The House of Representatives failed to pass the new short-term funding bill, with most lawmakers opposing it.
