A congressional inquiry into the assassination attempt on US President Donald Trump at a campaign rally one year prior bemoaned "inexcusable" failures in the Secret Service's response and operations and demanded harsher disciplinary measures.

The then-Republican presidential candidate was wounded by a shooter at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, causing minor injuries to his ear. A federal sniper killed the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, after one bystander was murdered and two others were injured.

"What happened was inexcusable and the consequences imposed for the failures so far do not reflect the severity of the situation," the report released by the US Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee said.
