Sheinbaum: Mexico will respond in kind to Trump's tariffs
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday that she will send a letter to United States President-elect Donald Trump after he announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on all goods from Mexico and Canada due to the inflow of illegal immigrants and drugs from the two countries.
Speaking at her daily press conference, Sheinbaum noted that Mexico will respond in kind if Trump carries out his plans. "Neither threats nor tariffs are the way to address the migration phenomenon or drug consumption in the United States," the president emphasized.
The Mexican head of state also insisted that most of the illegal weapons seized in Mexico come from the United States. "We do not produce the weapons. We do not consume synthetic drugs. The deaths resulting from crime in order to meet the demand for drugs" from the US "unfortunately come from our side," she stressed.
