Google refuses EU's fact-check mandate for search results
Google LLC informed the European Commission of its decision to reject the newly proposed mandate on fact-checking integration. According to a letter obtained by Axios on Thursday, the tech giant argued that the directive is neither "appropriate" nor "effective" for its services.
The Commission's Disinformation Code of Practice would require Google to display fact-check results alongside its search results and YouTube videos. In the letter, Kent Walker, Google's president of global affairs, defended the company's current content moderation strategy, citing its effectiveness during last year's "unprecedented cycle of global elections" as evidence of its success.
Walker assured that Google remains committed to enhancing its existing content moderation practices.
