The runway at Miyazaki Airport in southwest Japan was closed on Wednesday due to an unexplained explosion, Nikkei Asia reported, citing local authorities.

No injuries were reported in the blast that left behind a hole "with a diameter of 7 meters and a depth of 1 m" on a taxiway. The runway closure led to the suspension of all flights to and from the airport and is expected to last until Wednesday evening.

An airport official told AFP that police and the fire department were investigating the incident.
