Broadcom, TSMC said to eye Intel's chip design, factories
Broadcom Inc. is considering a bid for Intel's chip design and marketing business but would only go forward with the proposal if it finds a partner for the American chip-making giant's manufacturing business, the Wall Street Journal reported citing persons familiar with the matter.
No formal bid has been sent out to Intel yet, the sources said. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is separately considering a bid to obtain Intel's chip factories but the considerations are said to be preliminary.
The chipmaker has been experiencing difficulties recently and has reported a 7% reduction in fourth-quarter revenue of its fiscal 2024 amid stiff competition from industry rivals. On the other hand, the White House indicated it could oppose foreign companies controlling Intel's US-based chip plants.
