US embassy building in Vanuatu 'not viable for operations' after quake
The United States Department of State said that the building housing the US embassy in Vanuatu's capital city of Port Vila "is not viable for operations" after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the South Pacific island nation on Tuesday.
"All U.S. Embassy staff, as well as Peace Corps staff and volunteers, are safe and accounted for," the US State Department said in a statement. "We are working to determine if any U.S. citizens were affected and stand ready to provide consular assistance," the statement added.
Citing government information, Katie Greenwood, head of the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) Pacific Delegation, said in a post on X that the quake killed at least 14 people and injured 200.
