UK signals cautious response to US tariffs, engages in talks
The UK government is adopting a cautious approach to recent US steel and aluminum tariffs, set to impose a 25% import tax starting March 12. A spokesperson for UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated London "will take a considered approach to this [and] engage with the US on the detail, but the government is clear we will work in our national interest and this issue is no different to that," as reported by AFP and BBC on Tuesday.
According to government sources, "cool heads" are necessary to avoid escalating trade tensions, with immediate retaliation possibly "not in the best interest of the industry." Unlike the EU and Canada, who have vowed to respond firmly, the UK appears focused on diplomatic engagement.
British ministers plan to meet with steel industry leaders and unions on Tuesday and visit major steel companies later in the week, signaling a measured approach distinct from other G7 allies' responses.
