TSMC to Trump: $100B project hardly in five years
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) C. C. Wei (pictured) revealed during a Tuesday shareholder meeting that he told United States President Donald Trump that establishing a $100 billion-worth venture in the latter country would be difficult to complete in five years and that it will "take time."
Wei told investors that the company has been in contact with the US Commerce Department about Trump's tariffs on foreign semiconductor-linked products "from early on." He admitted to sharing concerns that higher duties would raise TSMC's production costs in the US. Still, Wei also noted that the levies are "ultimately a matter between governments, not between a government and a company."
Earlier during the call, Wei said that TSMC's demand still surpasses the supply despite the tariffs.
