Syrian rebel group taps political chief to form transitional gov't
Syria's Islamist opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) tasked on Monday Mohammed al-Bashir with the formation of a new transitional government in the immediate aftermath of the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's government over the weekend, according to Syrian media.
Al-Bashir has been serving as the prime minister of the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG), a de-facto administrative authority overseeing the Idlib region in northwestern Syria, which has been primarily under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham since 2017. Al-Bashir is expected to work with sitting Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali to secure a peaceful transition of power.
The fall of Assad from power marked the end of the Syrian Arab Republic under the Assad dynasty which has ruled Syria since 1963.
