Ishiba, Trump to allegedly have call on tariffs today
United States President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba are set to hold a direct telephone conversation later today and discuss how to proceed with future trade negotiations, Fuji News Network reported on Monday, citing government officials.
According to the report, the two leaders are expected to discuss the upcoming 24% tariff that Trump imposed on Japanese goods, which will take effect on April 9. The officials cited in the report claimed that Ishiba will not make any new proposals during the call but only confirm how to proceed with future talks.
The Japanese prime minister previously said that the US tariffs are a "national crisis" and "extremely unfortunate," noting that he is prepared to travel to Washington and discuss the levies with Trump directly, "if necessary."
