European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Friday that member states can introduce border control within the European Union, but stressed there are several conditions for such a move, including it being time-limited and coordinated with neighboring countries.

In response to a question on whether Germany's recently announced measures on migration are in line with EU's laws, Von der Leyen stressed that Germany has been in contact with EU officials, as well as its neighbors about the move.

The EU official refused to clearly respond if the EU plans infringement proceedings against Germany, but pointed out there is a "dilemma" because the bloc is currently working under an old law, that is in the process of being replaced by a new one that "looks differently" on the issues of migration and asylum. She called for implementing the new law as soon as possible as it would "offer solutions."
