Google, Meta, Amazon back tripling nuclear capacity by 2050
An industry group of major energy users signed a pledge backing the goal of tripling global nuclear capacity by 2025, the World Nuclear Association announced in a statement on Wednesday.
The group includes tech giants Meta Platforms Inc., Amazon.com Inc., and Google LLC, as well as the Dow Chemical Company, Occidental Petroleum Corporation, Aliseas Group S.A., Orlen Synthos Green Energy and Japan's IHI Corporation. The listed companies joined 14 banks and financial institutions, 140 nuclear industry firms, and 31 countries that previously supported the initiative.
"We're excited to join alongside this multi-organizational effort with the Tripling Nuclear Pledge to reiterate our commitment to nuclear energy," Meta Global Energy chief, Urvi Parekh said. Meanwhile, Amazon Web Services' Americas Energy and Water head, Brandon Oyer, claimed the company invested over $1 billion in nuclear energy projects last year, stressing that "accelerating nuclear energy development will be critical to strengthening our nation's security, meeting future energy demands, and addressing climate change."
