Germany is set to hold a snap general election on February 23, 2025, following an agreement between the country's largest political parties.

A source within Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD) confirmed to AFP the decision on Tuesday. The agreement was made between the SPD and the conservative Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union in Bavaria factions in the Bundestag.

The date for Germany's snap election is expected to be officially confirmed by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The election date announcement follows the collapse of Scholz's government after a dispute with Finance Minister Christian Lindner over the national budget. Scholz is set to deliver an address to parliament on Wednesday and is expected to announce a vote of confidence, which his coalition is likely to lose. This confidence vote will be potentially on December 18.
