Germany on Friday urged its citizens to leave Iran after a German-Iranian national, Jamshid Sharmahd was executed on alleged terrorism charges.

"We have long had a travel warning for Iran and a request to Germans in Iran to leave the country because we saw from the Jamshid Sharmahd case that Iran is taking German citizens hostage," a German Foreign Ministry spokesperson said at a press conference, adding that the country wants "to spare other German citizens this fate."

On Thursday, Germany ordered the closure of all three Iranian consulates, in Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich, in response to Sharmahd's execution.
