EU will not relax food safety rules in US talks
European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen reiterated on Friday that the European Union will not lower its food safety standards in trade negotiations with the United States. However, he added that the EU is open to purchasing more hormone-free beef from the US as part of a wider deal.
Hansen also said the EU is willing to discuss lowering tariffs on fertilizers imported from the US, as well as the possibility of a zero-for-zero tariff regime for wine. The EU-US trade talks are ongoing in a tense atmosphere as the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick accused the union of unduly targeting US tech companies.
