At least 31 people were killed after a bus fell off a bridge in Guatemala City, the local fire department's spokesperson Rafael Zuniga told the media on Monday.

The official explained that bus was moving through heavy traffic when it reportedly collided several cars having lost control of its speed and fell off the bridge called Puente Belice, which goes above a road and a creek. The search for more trapped passengers and possible survivors continues.

Meanwhile, President Bernardo Arevalo declared a national day of mourning and instructed the state police and the National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) to assist in the response to the incident.
