Amazon invests in small nuclear reactors in US
Amazon.com Inc. announced on Wednesday that it signed agreements with three companies for the construction of small modular reactors (SMR) as part of its plan to keep matching electricity consumed by its operations with renewable energy. The supported projects include four SMRs in Washington state, an SMR in Virginia, and nuclear reactor equipment development.
"Nuclear is a safe source of carbon-free energy that can help power our operations and meet the growing demands of our customers, while helping us progress toward our Climate Pledge commitment to be net-zero carbon across our operations by 2040," Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman said. Google also signed an SMR deal earlier this week.
